Austin is in the middle of Cedar Fever madness.
A wonderfully wet fall has yielded off-the-charts pollen counts. This weekend, cedar pollen is so high that clouds of it were mistaken for fiery smoke! For those of you on a heavy regimen of Benadryl, Zyrtec, and Flonase, here are some natural remedies to keep in mind.
Acupuncture is a great way to help calm the body down during your more severe attacks. If you allergies are also prone to turn into chest congestion, acupuncture can help clear out the gunk and prevent infections.
For long term allergy relief, acupuncture is traditional done 6 months prior to when your allergy attacks occur. Treatment plans focus on regulating the immune system to build up your resistance to the allergen.
Chinese Herbal Formulas:
Isn’t it nice to know that hundreds or even thousands of years ago, ancient people went through the same agonizing symptoms that we experience now? Even nicer is knowing that traditional Chinese medicine doctors created some wonderful herbal formulations to keep our noses from running away from us. Not only are these formulas effective, they are specifically designed to target whatever symptom is bothering you the most, from sore throats, to headaches, to rhinitis, to chest phlegm. There’s a forumla for that!
Avoiding Histamines in Your Diet:
Did you know that we can ingest foods that raise out bodies histamine levels? That’s right! We can actually eat foods that contribute to our allergy symptoms. While these foods traditionally don’t create an allergic reaction in us, consuming them while your histamine level is already elevated can increase your seasonal misery. Histamine levels rise in foods that have been processed, dried, or pickled. So, try to eat fresh! Here is a list of the top histamine-producing foods to avoid this allergy season.
- Sauerkraut (most fermented foods are to be avoided)
- Parmesan Cheese (aged cheese in general should be avoided)
- Sausage (fresh sausage is lower than cured)
- Blue Cheese
- Red Wine
It is also possible that you may have a histamine reaction to everyday foods. So be mindful of any digestive issues that you experience after eating.
