Spring Awakenings: Loving Your Liver
In traditional Chinese medicine, our liver is called the General of the body. It oversees how freely our energy or qi, can flow and is in charge of helping us detox the body. The liver plays a key role in gynecological issues for both men and women as well. Spring is considered the best time of year to nourish our livers, ensuring good health to it for the rest of the year.
Stretch It Out
The liver is associated with the element of wood. So picture your liver as a young, strong tree, reaching out with its branches and roots. Our livers take up a large amount of room in our abdominal cavities. An organ that big needs a lot of room to expand and stretch. The liver is also in charge of making sure our tendons stay limber and loose. Spring is a great time to focus on exercises that promote flexibility and stretching. Yoga is a great option and so is Thai massage. When you’re stuck at the office, set a timer on your phone for mini-stretch breaks.
Spring is the time of year where green, tender veggies are in season. Spring peas, especially pea shoots, parsley, spring onions, lettuce, artichokes, and asparagus are just some seasonal veggies that your liver will love. Not a surprise that many of these veggies are natural detoxifiers, helping your liver do its job of detoxing our bodies.
Aside from just eating green, surround yourself in it! Go for a hike in nature. Enjoy the few weeks of Spring that we have before Summer strikes!
Eat a Little Sour (in moderation)
Slightly sour tasting foods can help the liver relax and improve its energy and blood circulation. Sour tastes also help generate fluids, keeping hydration levels up for the scorching summer ahead. Green apples and kiwis are delicious foods with a sour taste. Also, try using more vinaigrettes in your salads, or adding a dash of balsamic vinegar to cooked greens.
Relax those Shoulders
Tight neck, upper back and shoulders? Be sure to book yourself an acupuncture appointment to help resolve that tightness. That area of the body is a pain referral area for the liver. So, it’s also a good time to look at your day-to-day stress and party levels. Working hard and partying hard will leave your liver angry and your shoulders hard as rocks.
